Kyoukai no Kanata ("Beyond the Boundary") is a light novel series written by Nagomu Torii, and published by KA Esma Bunko, i.e. Kyoto Animation's light novel division.
It's also getting an anime sometime soon (by KyoAni, of course), and there's a promotional video for it out. (Granted, the PV was for the light novel and not the anime per se, but I imagine it should look similar.)
I'm pumped.
It's been ages since KyoAni did anything resembling action - aside from a scene or two in Disappearance, a few sketches in Nichijou, and the Chuu2 battle sequences in Chuu2, KyoAni basically hasn't touched action since Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid - and that was 8 years ago! It's good to see KyoAni getting back to its roots. Not that I dislike their more recent oeuvre - Hyouka is probably my favorite anime of all time, and Nichijou and K-ON are also top-notch (and I, like most, cry to Clannad evertim).
But anyway, back to Kyoukai no Kanata. I'll be translating the light novel; the prologue is now posted on pastebin (link). Check the progress tracker for information about when I make updates.
Since I'm going to be posting incremental updates, it'd be a pain in the ass to run all of this through LaTeX as I'm translating (plus, nobody's going to want to download a new pdf everytime I update). When I'm done with this volume, though, I'll latexify it and post a final release with typographical goodies and all that.
(Yes, I'm still working on Fate/strange fake; once I'm clear of exams [in a week or two], I'll be hard at work on it.)

I foung your blog while looking for a translation of this light novel. I'm going to read the prologue now :)
ReplyDeleteI'll be waiting for more updates since this project seems interesting!
Thanks for your hard work! :)
oh yay thank you :D
ReplyDeleteThank you for the translation
ReplyDeleteAny chance of you doing some spoilers? I just curious about the romance side of the story. Kind of getting tired of the love triangle trope. It's obvious Mirai is going to have a love interest in Akihito, but does the other female character Mitsuki also like him?
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance for any information you can offer.
Once I read volume 2 (probably in a week or so), I'll make a short-ish post with spoiler summaries of what goes on in the novels.
DeleteCoool. Thanks for the heads up.
DeleteThank you very much for doing this. I appreciate it because there are not a lot of translations out there yet for light novels.
ReplyDeleteWow! Thank you so much for your hard work! I'm really anticipating the entire volume of this light novel and loving the anime! Thanks again! =]
ReplyDeletecan you explain about Akihito's death in Episode 9 and 10(spoiler only)?
ReplyDeletewhat's the novel said about it?
The anime diverged from the novel way back around episodes 3-4. This arc is entirely anime-original (unless it somehow appears in volume 3 of the LN, which seems unlikely with the way things are going).
Deletethank you for yor translation, btw would you mind if this translation hosted in Baka-Tsuki?
ReplyDeleteI would very much prefer that you _not_ host this on Baka-Tsuki.
DeleteGreetings, so the anime has diverged that much from the novel? Does that means that the story we are watching now is completly anime-original? The plot was really good, why would they do that? So sad. Anyways, are you still going to translate the novel or will you leave it? Thanks from Costa Rica!
ReplyDeleteStill translating (eventually).
Deletethank you so much.....

ReplyDeletei really want to know what happens in the second part of the movie and that'll probably be in the third volume, so id love to read the third volume please!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your work...but now can you translate the other chapter?
ReplyDeleteIf you are still active and reading this, I will pay you to translate the full light novel series. Paypal would be the method of choice since it offers protection for both of us should one of us back out or something. I would need to talk to you about how long it takes to translate roughly a page and go from there based on an average time and about 10$ per hour. I've dumped a ton of money into Rosetta Stone trying to learn Japanese myself and that's going nowhere, so I might as well just hire a translator for projects I really want done, since I guess my taste isn't popular and everything I like gets dropped ;P
ReplyDeleteI am also willing to add payment with Laine for continued work on this light novel. I love what you've done so far.
ReplyDeleteHello!! IS this still being updated? I am willling to pay for this to be finished too!!
ReplyDeleteI would also pay for a translation of this. It's one of my favorite animes by far.
ReplyDelete- Rhayne
I really want to buy the novels to read them but I guess this forum is kind of dead.
ReplyDeleteOctober 17th 2021.
ReplyDeleteI still can't find raw untranslated version of the novel. I don't try to find translation, because I know, that there isn't. But ever raw versions. On Japanese. Maybe I should check 2nd page of Google, but that thing is really scary.
Still, I do hope, that this forum will not so dead, and some guys start translate and post it (This could be me, if I'll find originals) or this chat will just alive. IDK, why I want that and why I write that, but hey) - by VovaLeder
Tienes la novela completa traducida al español? (si encontraste algún scan o pagina que la haya traducido por completo).
