Aldnoah.Zero Extra Episode 03 is a drama CD that came with volume 4 of the Aldnoah.Zero BDs. It's set in a school-life alternate universe, where the cast attends "Aldnoah Academy".

Note that Extra Episode 02 is a series of short stories (that I may translate at some point), not a drama CD. I don't even know what Extra Episode 01 is, if it even exists.

BD volume 9 will come with another drama CD (Extra Episode 06), and the BD box set will include yet another drama CD titled "Hikari no Mahou Shoujo Seylum"; I may sub some, all, or none of them.

In particular, depression that led to me fucking up my last semester of college and not graduating. Shit sucks. Anyway. I've updated the sidebar "Current Projects", but here's a brief rundown:

Huge apologies to /u/ and our friendly /u/ typesetter for fucking out after the first volume of the Madoka Rebellion manga; thankfully, it looks like they were able to finish volumes 2 and 3 with the help of some other translator(s) - see here.

I'll finish the first volume of the Kyoukai no Kanata light novel at some point; no guarantees on a timeframe. I may or may not work on further volumes (the anime was not great and kind of soured me on the whole franchise).

The Hyouka "Arienai Makuaigeki" segments are still a thing I plan to do. No guarantees on timeframe.

Black Rock Shooter: The Game is stalled at the typesetters, who seem to have dropped off the face of the earth. I don't know what happened to them, so here is the translated text in case somebody else wants to edit them into the raws: translated text.Nakulashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16008661025727992847noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302742030116513433.post-80238342590941979352014-01-02T22:42:00.002-05:002014-01-06T21:38:28.218-05:00Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica - Rebellion volume 1Manga Raw: MEGA [externally-controlled link]
I have re-joined forces with our friendly /u/ typesetter to work on the Rebellion manga, by Hanokage and Magica Quartet. Here's volume 1. Volume 2 has been published, but we don't have any raws, so we're stuck until those show up.

P.S. Kyoukai no Kanata is not dropped, but it'll be a while longer before I get back to it. BRS The Game is not dropped, but it's stuck at typesetting (visit Lost n Found if you want to ask them about it). The Hyouka drama CDs (the Arienai Makuaigeki segments) will get done eventually. The Beatless LN is apparently being officially translated. It really sucks. You heard it here first. I'm thinking about doing some excerpts from the Monogatari series at some point. If there's anything else you want, drop me a line and if it's interesting, I'll consider it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302742030116513433.post-31604211488606553132013-09-17T17:07:00.000-04:002013-09-17T17:07:46.382-04:00More Kyoukai no Kanata stuffI've added translations of the voice samples that were uploaded earlier today, as well as info on the radio show that's going to start airing in October. Check after the jump for some extra info and also a bit about Shindō Ayaka's dialect.

異能力 (i-nouryoku: xenomachics) - this term refers to the special abilities of a xenor. For example, Kuriyama Mirai's xenomachics comprises her ability to manipulate blood and use it as a weapon. The term 異能力 means "other-ability". In this case, the "other" part (異, i) is essentially a contraction of 異界士 (xenor), and as we saw in part 1, I have used the prefix "xeno-" in correspondence with the Japanese character 異 (i), to refer to things relating in some way or another to xenors. Then, to denote the nouryoku (ability) part of this term, I have used a variant of the (rather uncommon) Greek suffix "-machy".

Let me say a few things about "-machy". Those of you who are familiar with the creation myths of Greek legend may be aware of the Titanomachy and the Gigantomachy, in which the Olympians fought against (and defeated) the Titans and the Giants, respectively. As you might surmise from this, "-machy" is a combining form meaning “fighting”. Following this line of construction, the term "xenomachy" would refer to something like "the battle of [someone] against the xenors", which isn't quite what 異能力 means - I would need something more like "the way in which xenors do battle".

As such, I have corrupted the "-machy" suffix into "-machics", by analogy with terms like "pyrotechnics" and "aerobics", which are all of the form "X-ics" where the "-ics" implies something like "the art of X". This is a bit of a forced construction, but I like it so there.

Note also that the unusual construction 異能力者 (i-nouryoku-sha: xenomachtor) appears a couple times. This breaks down as "other-ability-person", and so I have again chosen the agentizing suffix "-or" (actually "-tor", in accordance with Greek practice as I understand it). It's unclear to me whether there's any difference between xenors and xenomachtors, but the terms are similar-but-different in Japanese, so I've made them similar-but-different in English. Presumably, all xenors are xenomachtors, but not necessarily the other way around.

妖力 (youryoku: ghastmacht) - this term refers to how strong a dreamghast (or a ghastling, or a half-dreamghast) is. A lull (see below) is a period of time in which ghastmacht declines. This term is effectively a contraction of 妖夢の力, meaning "strength of a dreamghast", and is essentially the dreamghast analogue of pneumagoi (see below).

The "macht" here is the German "macht", cognate to English "might" and the same morpheme found in "Wehrmacht". As an interesting aside (if I'm reading my dictionaries right), both "macht" and "-machy" originate from the Proto-Indo-European *magh-, albeit the former via Proto-Germanic and the latter via Greek. This is a nice state of affairs for my translation, since both 異能力 (xenomachics) and 妖力 (ghastmacht) share the character 力, meaning strength

霊力 (reiryoku: pneumagoi) - this term refers to the power / energy a xenor has access to. This term doesn't show up until mid-way through chapter 2, but it fits in this post thematically. Basically, the following analogy holds: xenor is to pneumagoi as dreamghast is to ghastmacht (see below). Literally, 霊力 breaks down as "spirit-power" (霊 is not used in reference to anything dreamghastly in the novel, so it's presumably a different sort of "spirit"). Pneumagoi is constructed from Greek "pneuma" (soul / spirit) and "magoi" (magus / sorcerer in the plural). This is a clear abuse of language, insofar as 1.) I have glued together these two words without declining/conjugating/whatevering them appropriately; and 2.) adding the meanings together gives you some sort of person, rather than a substance or idea.

I'm going to roll with this anyway, though, since the term is thoroughly explained the first time it shows up in the novel. As you can see, I'm trying pretty hard to keep etymologically similar translations for Japanese terms that are etymologically similar / share a character / whatever. "Magoi" (uninflected "magos") also derives from the same PIE root as "macht" and "machy" (unless they derive from an Iranian language, in which case that's another bag of worms altogether).

凪 (nagi: lull) - this term refers to the phenomenon in which there is a decline in the power and abundance of dreamghasts (and, presumably, ghastlings). There's nothing too surprising here - nagi is literally a Japanese nautical term for a period of calm waters and low wind, and lull is an English term for the same.

As an aside, I very much like the character 凪 for the way in which its meaning is derived from its component parts. 凪 is written using 几 and 止. The former is not a character unto itself (in this context), but rather a radical (bushu) sometimes called 風構え (kaze-gamae: wind-structure), which features most prominently in the character for wind (風, kaze). The latter is a proper character that appears in words like 止む (yamu: to stop [intrans.]). As such, 凪 is actually composed of the pieces for "wind" and "to stop", and indeed, that is essentially the definition of 凪. I thought that was pretty cool.

思念体 (shinentai: psyclone) - a psyclone is a magical three-dimensional projection that can be stored in pieces of paper (and possibly other everyday objects), and can be caused to reappear by anybody with sufficiently advanced xenomachics. Akihito's mother sends him a postcard with a psyclone embedded in it, and Ayaka is able to make it manifest again.

The Japanese 思念体 means something like "thought-body", so psyclone seems like a pretty good localization to me. Psyclones are not to be confused with cyclones, which are unrelated, and which cannot, in general, be stored in pieces of paper.

Regarding Ayaka's dialect - as those of you familiar with Japanese media are likely aware, the standard Japanese dialect, and the one used by newscasters and so forth is generally based on the language spoken in the Tokyo area. Ayaka, however, speaks in a dialect from the Kansai region (which includes Osaka, Kyoto, etc.). I'm not sure which particular variant of Kansai dialect she uses, honestly, because I'm not exposed to this family of dialects often, but that doesn't matter for my current purposes.

In fansubbing circles, it has long been a common (though by no means universal) practice to translate the Kansai dialect into Southern American English (think Texas). In some contexts, this is a good choice - in comedy, Kansai dialect is sometimes used to signify stupid characters (boke), and the same holds for the usage of Southern American English in American comedy (think redneck humor).

Ayaka, however, is not a comedy character (though she is funny), and so I don't feel that using Southern American English here would be a particularly good choice. Plus, I wanted to try something different and see how it pans out.

Solution: Scottish English. Mind you, I'm not turning her speech into full-on Scots, because 1.) I don't know Scots; and 2.) odds are you don't either. The main goal here is to convey the impression that Ayaka has a Scottish accent, and to that effect, I've basically been replacing standard English words with their Scots equivalents only in those situations where doing so doesn't make the reading difficult for an English speaker with no knowledge of Scots. I've also thrown in a few other Scots features (more tag questions, some Scots idioms that are either straightforward or well-known in English, etc.). As part of this, I've been tossing in apostrophes in cases where the Scots word looks like a contracted form of an English word with the same meaning, even if the apostrophe isn't used in Scots orthography.

I'm not sure how well this will turn out, honestly, but I've never seen Scottish English used as a replacement for a nonstandard Japanese dialect, so I think the results will be interesting if nothing else. (If anybody who actually knows Scots wants to help me out by correctly Scoticizing some of her lines, that'd be great - I've got some dictionaries and I've heard a little bit of Scottish English in my time, but other than that, I'm kind of flying blind.)

I'd be very interested to hear feedback on this - is it too difficult to read? Does it just look stupid? How are non-native English readers faring with it? Etc., etc.

And with that, folks, Fate/strange fake has been completely translated. It's been over four years since Fate/strange fake was published in March 2009; more than five since the original April Fools' joke back in 2008; and about eight months since I started working on this in November 2012.

This is my first time translating a light novel in its entirety, and I think it's been a very informative experience. Mostly in terms of refining my own translation skills and English prose-writing, but also in terms of getting better with LaTeX, learning some basic image manipulation in GIMP, and so forth. LaTeX, for all its absurdity, produces beautiful output that is very difficult to recreate in any other system, and I heartily recommend its use for projects like mine (as this fine fellow has done).

A few notes about the three links you see above: the "full version" is what you should download in most cases - it's a pdf containing the light novel; nothing more and nothing less. The "reduced version" is a slightly altered pdf version of the light novel designed for viewing on low-end devices, such as early smartphones and early e-readers (it has no images and thus a smaller filesize, basically). The "complete collection" is a zip archive containing basically every file that I have that relates to Fate/strange fake, including: scans, transcriptions of the scans, the LaTeX source tree for the novel, some supplementary material from the original Fake/states night webpage, and more.

Anyway. With this, I'm pretty much done with Fate/strange fake (unless somebody spots any serious problems I introduced in between the last draft version and the final version). It's been real. I hope you all enjoyed this novel (and if you did, you should consider buying Narita Ryohgo things like the Baccano! and Durarara!! novels and manga to show your support). If you want to chat about Fate/strange fake, I'm sure the folks over at Beast's Lair would be more than happy to oblige.

And lastly: if you folks like the way I translate (or, if you like Bakemonogatari, which has some striking similarities), consider checking out my next LN translation project: Kyoukai no Kanata. I'm still working on it, but I'm releasing incremental updates as I finish segments of the novel, so you can start reading what I've finished right away.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com36tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302742030116513433.post-88786813763761901132013-06-20T13:06:00.001-04:002013-06-20T13:06:38.309-04:00BRS The Game chapter 3BRS The Game chapter 3: at LnF
Now that I've released part 2 of chapter 1, which contains a number of these terms, I think it's appropriate for me to identify them and explain my rationale for selecting them. I have done so here - check after the jump.

異界士 (ikaishi: xenor) - this term describes people like Mitsuki, Akihito's mother, and others who fight dreamghasts. Decomposed character-by-character, 異界士 means other-world-warrior. Decomposed morpheme-by-morpheme, xenor breaks down into foreign/other (xeno-) doer (-or, an agentizing suffix).

I have excluded the "world" meaning from my analogue of ikaishi because 1.) I could not find a sufficiently cromulent rendering that included tha meaning; and 2.) the word xenocosm captures the notion of "world" effectively anyway. ikaishi has no precedented usages in Japanese, aside from other people independently inventing the word for their own fantasy settings.

異界 (ikai: xenocosm) - this term refers to the realm to which dreamghasts and ghastlings are sent. Character-by-character, 異界 means other-world. Morpheme-by-morpheme, xenocosm is foreign/other (xeno-) world (-cosm).

This term does see some use in ordinary Japanese - ikai is used in academic discussions of mythology as a blanket term for otherworlds mythologically posited to exist, such as Hades in Greek mythology, or Yomi in Shinto mythology. Typically, it refers to a "spirit world" or "world of the dead" or something along those lines. I think it's also used in psychology/sociology to refer to "the Other", but I don't really want to dig through postmodernist psychobabble (in Japanese, at that) to figure out what the details are on that front.

妖夢 (youmu: dreamghast) - this term describes entities like Akihito's father and the 虚ろな影 (to be explained in a later blog post). They are, of course, the creatures against which xenors fight. Character-by-character, 妖夢 is supernatural/strange-dream. 妖 appears in words like 妖怪 youkai (roughly, ghost/spirit/apparition). The morpheme-wise decomposition should be obvious.

The word "ghast" doesn't really have any particularly strong connotations (outside of D&D circles) besides being creepy and sort of ghostly, which is pretty much how youmu are said to be. In this sense, it is a better choice than "ghost", since people have more pre-existing ideas about what a "ghost" is. I'm not entirely convinced that "ghast" is the best choice here, but it's the best I could come up with.

Aside: this has nothing to do with the 2hu character "Youmu Konpaku", who shares the same name.

妖夢憑き (youmutsuki: ghastling) - this term describes people who have been possessed by youmu. This one breaks down as youmu-possessed (cf. by analogy 悪魔憑き akumatsuki "one who has been possessed by a demon"). Here, -ling is a diminutive suffix (youmutsuki are in a sense lesser to youmu), with the added connotation of "one who follows" (e.g. ducklings follow a duck; underlings follow their leader; etc.), which is as close as I could get to the idea of "possessed" without using something like "dreamghast-possessees" or something absurd like that.

Broadly, you will note that I have tried to use Greek- and Latin-based roots for things relating to ikai, and Germanic-based roots and words for things relating to youmu. The novel doesn't really have an analogous distinction in the original Japanese - the analogous distinction in Japanese would be between kango and wago, or Sino-Japanese and native-Japanese words, but all the words I've discussed above are kango. Nonetheless, I thought this would be a nice stylistic flourish.

I'll be making another post like this once I've progressed far enough in the translation as to have a few more terms of art that are in need of explanation. That should happen around the end of Chapter 1Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302742030116513433.post-1888372265592020872013-06-16T19:51:00.001-04:002013-07-21T22:00:58.804-04:00OreImo x Railgun blog post 2Pastebin: (link)

Yeah, this is too good to pass up, actually. This week, Kirino and Kyousuke travel to the studio, where they meet Kuroko. Kirino and Kuroko then geek out over Misaka. There was an announcement (link 1, link 2) on Nicovideo's website that there's going to be some sort of in-character crossover talk show type thing between OreImo and Railgun (featuring, specifically, Kirino and Biribiri). There was a blog post on the Nicovideo blog that's sort of an introduction type thing, which I've translated (link above).

I doubt this is something I'll keep doing (I like both shows, but the premise is really dumb - apparently Railgun is an anime in the OreImo universe, but Biribiri is also a real person in the OreImo universe), but this was too silly to pass up.

Update (15 Jun 2013): I've not made much progress on this lately, since I've been busy finalizing Fate/strange fake. Now that that's mostly done, I'm back to working on Kyoukai no Kanata at full strength.

Update (12 Jul 2013): I've acquired volume 2 of Kyoukai no Kanata, so that'll come in good time. I've also finished scanning and (poorly) post-processing my copy of volume 1, so this'll speed up my transcription quite a bit.

Update (5 Aug 2013): Transcription complete, thanks in large part to my new best friend Adobe Acrobat X Pro. I'll be upping my translation pace in an effort to get volume 1 done before the fall anime season starts.

Update (7 Sep 2013): In case you didn't notice, I've translated some other Kyoukai no Kanata-related material - see here for some translations of the official website and here for translations of some promotional videos.

Kyoukai no Kanata ("Beyond the Boundary") is a light novel series written by Nagomu Torii, and published by KA Esma Bunko, i.e. Kyoto Animation's light novel division.

It's also getting an anime sometime soon (by KyoAni, of course), and there's a promotional video for it out. (Granted, the PV was for the light novel and not the anime per se, but I imagine it should look similar.)

I'm pumped.
It's been ages since KyoAni did anything resembling action - aside from a scene or two in Disappearance, a few sketches in Nichijou, and the Chuu2 battle sequences in Chuu2, KyoAni basically hasn't touched action since Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid - and that was 8 years ago! It's good to see KyoAni getting back to its roots. Not that I dislike their more recent oeuvre - Hyouka is probably my favorite anime of all time, and Nichijou and K-ON are also top-notch (and I, like most, cry to Clannad evertim).

But anyway, back to Kyoukai no Kanata. I'll be translating the light novel; the prologue is now posted on pastebin (link). Check the progress tracker for information about when I make updates.

Since I'm going to be posting incremental updates, it'd be a pain in the ass to run all of this through LaTeX as I'm translating (plus, nobody's going to want to download a new pdf everytime I update). When I'm done with this volume, though, I'll latexify it and post a final release with typographical goodies and all that.

(Yes, I'm still working on Fate/strange fake; once I'm clear of exams [in a week or two], I'll be hard at work on it.)
Just a quick update on the status of BRS The Game: LnF are still working on typesetting the remaining chapters of volume 1. No guarantees, but you might see another chapter this week, since they seem to have some free time on their hands.
Also, good news - we've found raws for volume 2, so you can rest assured that those will be scanlated eventually, barring acts of Angry Manjew and whatnot.
EDIT (29 Mar 2013): Volume 2 is also the last volume of BRS The Game, so the entire manga will, in fact, be scanlated. Hooray!

The Black Rock Shooter - Innocent Soul manga had apparently been sitting at 11 out of 12 chapters scanlated for the longest time. Go to the Downloads tab on their blog to download this chapter. Universe-specific terminology is kind of inconsistent across all the scanlated chapters, so be wary of that.

We have also started working on Black Rock Shooter The Game, which had been stalled at the first chapter since forever. The script for volume 1 has been translated in its entirety. So far, chapter 1 (of 6) has been typeset; visit LnF's website to download it. They're working on the remaining chapters in the volume, and should have those out eventually.

We don't have raws for volume 2 of BRS The Game (pretty sure that nobody on the internet has actually scanned those), so we're going to be stalled at the end of volume 1 unless those raws turn up at some point.

The pastebin version of the script has lines broken at 80 characters for improved readability; the mediafire version does not do that.
EDIT (7 Jan 2013): And volume 3 is scanlated now. Hurrah!

<strike>Update, 7 Jun 2013: I broke the script that updates the progress tracker and I can't really be arsed to fix it, seeing as I'm almost done. As of today, everything up through Rider's chapter has been posted on Beast's Lair for pre-reading / QC / whatever. The rest of it (Lancer's chapter, the epilogue, the afterword, the Fake/states night webpages, and the Pieces of Type-Moon page) will be done before the end of the month (for real this time!).</strike>

<del>I'm planning on translating Fate/strange fake, which is basically official fanfiction for the Nasuverse written by Ryohgo Narita. I'm aware that there is/was a translation occurring at Beast's Lair, but it seems to be stalled/dropped/dead. So there's this instead.

Anyway, a progress meter:

Note (3 Jan 2013): I'm still working on this; I've just been on vacation with only intermittent computer/internet access for a little while, so going is slow for the moment. By next week, I'll be up and running again.

Note (13 Mar 2013): Real life has been kicking my ass lately, but I'm back to working on this. Dunno if I can give an estimated time of completion, but rest assured that it will get done. Right now, we're at ~60% translated.

Note (1 Apr 2013): Three of the six core chapters are done, and we're at 88.5% translation overall. Translation should be complete before the week is out, at which point I'll move on to editing. Once I've gotten it into reasonable shape, I'll post a draft on the Beast's Lair forums to solicit further comment from people while I continue editing. No guarantees on time frame, but I _think_ I can have the draft out by the end of the month.</del>

It seems that a typesetter anon on /u/ is typesetting volume 1 right now, so that's nifty.

I had a large chunk of free time this week to translate volumes 1 and 2, but it's unlikely that I'll have as much time available when volume 3 drops. If the volume 3 raws are uploaded before/during Thanksgiving week (Nov 17-25), I might be able to translate it before Thanksgiving week is out, but after that I have exams, so I probably won't have time.

Again, anyone who wants to use this script for whatever purposes is free to do so. As a matter of courtesy, it would be nice if you would comment to let me know if you'll be typesetting this or whatever.

EDIT (25 Nov 2012): /u/ typesetter anon has finished typesetting this volume (cf. foolz). Get it from mediafire.

Apparently nobody was translating this, so I figured I may as well. I'll get to translating volume 2 if people want it.

I have no interest in dealing with all the other work necessary for creating a proper scanlation of a manga, but if you want to use this script in your scanlation, feel free. Credit would be nice, but if that's a dealbreaker, then you needn't.

EDIT (7 Nov 2012): A wonderful typesetter anon on /u/ is typesetting this, and is done through chapter 3 at the moment; keep an eye on the /u/ Madoka thread(s) (or check foolz) for updates.

<strike>EDIT (10 Nov 2012): The typesetter anon on /u/ has finished typesetting this volume (cf. foolz). Get it from mediafire.</strike>

The raw archive contains pdfs of chapters 1-4. I got this from the official site a while back, but it looks like they took the raws down sometime in the past week, so here they are.

I'm not going to translate any more of this because this has the dullest, most painful-to-read prose of anything I've read in any language ever. I tried my best to deshittify it in the beginning, but I eventually gave up because there's no way to deshittify it without rewriting it from whole cloth.

At the very least, I hope the /a/non who requested this enjoys it.

Also, if somebody can point me to raws for the manga, I'll probably translate the script for it. It can't possibly be as bad as the LN, and the art looks like it'll be pretty nice.

EDIT (19 Dec 2012): There's apparently some interest in this light novel on the Baka-Tsuki forums. To make it easier for any future translators to extract the text from my translation, I've made the LaTeX source for the translated pdf available on mediafire (http://www.mediafire.com/?72i63qe26ivcezw). If you want to compile it yourself, you'll have to use xetex because of moonrunes.
