  • Update (15 Jun 2013): I've not made much progress on this lately, since I've been busy finalizing Fate/strange fake. Now that that's mostly done, I'm back to working on Kyoukai no Kanata at full strength.
  • Update (12 Jul 2013): I've acquired volume 2 of Kyoukai no Kanata, so that'll come in good time. I've also finished scanning and (poorly) post-processing my copy of volume 1, so this'll speed up my transcription quite a bit.
  • Update (5 Aug 2013): Transcription complete, thanks in large part to my new best friend Adobe Acrobat X Pro. I'll be upping my translation pace in an effort to get volume 1 done before the fall anime season starts.
  • Update (7 Sep 2013): In case you didn't notice, I've translated some other Kyoukai no Kanata-related material - see here for some translations of the official website and here for translations of some promotional videos.

  14. I just read the prologue and WOW, you are good! However, on line 67:
"She sounded positively dumbfounded. That's not surprising. Why did I think that? Well, if I were an ordinary human, I would've certainly passed out from blood loss by now. Well, that's not quite it. When she figured out what I really as, she was even more astonished. I put on as kind an expression as I could manage"

Shouldn't the 2nd to the last sentence be: "When she figured out what I really was, she was even more astonished."

  15. You're translation of this novel has been superb so far; very excellent work; hoping to see more as soon as possible

  16. Great translation, thanks a lot. Great work, also. Has you planned edit in PDF files with the novels raws?

    1. Yes, I will create a PDF containing properly typeset text and images from the novel once I have finished translating each volume. (Download "Fate/strange fake (full)" from http://nakulas.blogspot.com/2013/07/fate-strange-fake.html to get an idea of what it'll look like).

    2. Wow, not only that your translating it for us but your also giving free full PDF downloads from your work without a second thought. You really admired me to think that humans do really help each other, and think more on doing things that we love than having something in return of what we love to do. For real, thank you so much!

  19. After reading about a screenful or so I noticed that the text didn't seem like the typical translated Japanese light novel but rather almost like original material by an English native. Good jobu.

    1. That's what I've been shooting for, so I'm glad you think so! Thanks!

  22. Thank you very much for having a heart and translating such wonderful material for us! It is very appreciated :)
    Also, take care :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. I found a slight mistake
    Chapter 2 part 3 line no. 799
    "I could finally rela."
    rela should be relax XD

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm not sure, but in
    Chapter 1, part 1 line no. 185
""Are you listening to what I'm saying?" asked she.""
Shouldn't it be 'she asked' instead of 'asked she'?

Also, I really love this translation. Thank you very, very much!

    ReplyDelete
  25. WOW JUST STARTING HERE BUT I AM LOVING THIS SO FAR!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING, CANT WAIT TO READ MORE!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. On line 351 in chapter 2 part 2 it reads "Hiro'omi and I exchanged glasses" did you mean for it to be "glances" instead of "glasses"?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TRANSLATING THIS BTW!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is an incredibly bizarre typo on my part. That should indeed be "glasses". Thanks for catching that.

      Delete
    2. Jesus I am bad at this. Let me clarify now that the correct line is "Hiro'omi and I exchanged glances", as correctly identified by the OP. Glasses play no role here (unlike in so much of the rest of the story).

  27. Thank you so much for translating this!
    Please keep going!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I realized this mistake just after reading some of the parts for the second time
    Chapter 2 part 2 line no. 345
"D-d-d-d-don't try to be f-fredly with me," she stammered.

I didn't notice immediately that 'fredly' should be 'friendly' XD

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. She's kind of stammering and flubbing her words in that line, so that's intentional.

    2. O I C
Okay then and thanks for the info :D

  29. You're a GREAT translator. You put such life into the words rather than just translating the piece word per word. Thank you so much. :)

  30. Thank you soooo much for translating this LN. I became a fan just recently and want more of the story. I am really grateful you want to translate it. Please keep going!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I've been so excited reading your translated script. Just wondering though if the next part is coming up any soon?

    ReplyDelete
  32. WOW, you're a reeaally good translator. I love how you don't translate the words literally. The words still seem to preserve the "culture" in them (sorry I can't seem to find a good word for it). Japanese essence conveyed in English words. You have quite the talent! You must have really been immersed in both Japanese and English culture to have understood the true meaning behind the words. For that I salute you! :D

Which makes me wonder... are you a Eng or Jap native?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I speak English natively. That's the hard part, and that's what most Jap->Eng light novel translators lack. My Japanese is non-native, but I've studied the language at some level for the past 9-10 years, so I'm pretty decent on that front, too.

      Delete
  33. Read the entire translation you've done so far in 2 days. You are a very good translator. Congratulations. Are next parts close?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've been obsessed with this series after watched episode 1. Out of curiosity, i seek the novel translation and found this.
Truthfully, The anime is not bad, but the novel seems more interesting. So, thank you very much for translating this light novel. Please keep going and continue the next part! ^^

  35. Thank you so much for the translation.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thank you so much for the translation please continue!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Your translations really are amazing! You're able to... retain the Japanese qualities in the original work, if that makes any sense. Regardless, it makes your translations all the better. Thank you for your effort, even with your busy schedule! I hope that, when your life is in a stabler place, you can return to this project. Until then, or if that happens, I shall wait with earnest. Thank you again!

  47. I love reading this and really want to read all the volumes before I watch the anime. But since it's ending I will probably just read what I can and then watch and compare! Thanks for the translations I loved how you use an intense vocabulary, of which I had to actually look up some words and I'm a freaking native American! Keep up the amazing work! I await your future translation. P.S. is there anywhere I can actually buy this book? I tried on JPN Amazon but they don't ship to the US... I speak Japanese but need to learn to read sometime ^_^

  65. Just read the prologue, and it was fantastic. I look forward to reading the rest. Thank you so much for translating. I've been slowly creeping toward learning Japanese, but until I have learned it well enough to read it myself, it is wonderful to have a talented translator for a very interesting series!

  69. THANK YOU SO MUCH for translating the light novel. I've been wanting to read this for a while and basically you're the only one I found who are translating the light novel of kyoukai no kanata. I hope when you are somewhat free of your studies and whatnot you could come back and continue this project. Until then we will wait for your return. We deeply appreciate your effort and hope to see more of your projects updated soon.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thank you so much for translating this! I just read through the whole thing in a matter of hours...can I say "I couldn't put it down" while referring to something on the computer? Not only is the story completely addictive, your writing style is very natural and engrossing!

I have to say, your prose style is extremely good. Not just compared to other fan translations - this is comparable to, or even better than, a great deal of professionally translated texts I've read. You have a rare gift! While I can't really encourage you to take time off from your studies, please don't give up on this project - not just because I want to know what happens next, but also because the world needs more writers/translators of your quality!

    Good luck. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  71. please continue this! this is the only translation I've found!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thank you so much for translating what you have so far! You've done an awesome job and I want to read more (that doesn't have to be google translated--they don't compare to you in style or clarity at all). Hope you have the time to continue this pleeeeeaaaaaase!!!!

  74. This light novel is great, thank you so much for translating it! Personally, I don´t read a novel unless I enjoyed the prologue and first chapter, and this one just scored on both accounts: the story´s flow is very interesting and the main character´s funny. I look forward to the next chapters :D

    ReplyDelete
  75. Amazing translations! I Hope you come back soon. I'm not sure if you have one already but you should definitely add a donation link. 80. Heya nakulas, hope you're doing alright. I know personally how stumbling with life issues and especially graduation can be so miserable.

Just like ya to know, however long it takes and whatever you have to do to get through it all, I really appreciate your translation works here. Your writing is a pleasure to read and I quite enjoy the nomenclature you've created along with your wordsmithing abilities.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Is this still being worked on? This is my absolute favorite anime, and I'd really love to read 100% of the source material.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Also sorry if I was a little candid. Life can get in the way of things, or is just downright more important. If you're still doing this, I'd just like to know so I can eventually read my favorite anime series' source material.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Heya nakulas, just wanted to let you know that I come round every now and then to check for any updates. Just a few days ago, I broke down and started watching the rest of the anime series as I go so into your translation work for this LN and it was my only other option to experience the series.

But I hope all is well for you.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I wish I could read Japanese. Then I would've bought the Original novels already.

    ReplyDelete

  93. Heeeeeey, It's been a couple years, was the project dropped? I totally get it if stuff came up and this got sidelined for a while, that happens, but just letting you know this is a favorite of mine (and obviously quite a few others), and I'm really glad to even have gotten to read this much!!

I know there's still an audience if you picked it back up, here's to hoping that happens someday! :3
    Thanks!!!

  94. Thanks for translating KnK for us, Nakulas! You've done an amazing job so far :D I am so in love with this story >< it's so well-written. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the chapters.

Ahh the busyness of life :( it's never ending! But hopefully your time gets freed up to translate the rest of the chapters. I'm sure many KnK fans are eagerly waiting for this too!

  95. Hey nakulas, hope things are going alright for you. Still patiently holding out, hoping to hear some news from you. I wanted to let you know, something important which I often forget to let creators and artists know, that I am definitely willing to send some $$ for further work in the translation field. I know it is time consuming and real world issues must take precedence, but your output is worth donating for.

    ReplyDelete
  96. is this translation completely dropped?

    ReplyDelete
  97. oh no... did you drop the series entirely? I have hoped that after years of putting it off somebody, somewhere might have finished translating the novel by now. I guess that's still not the case T___T I wonder if this novel will ever be translated fully in english... aaaa
