Fate/strange fake plans

Update, 25 Jun 2013: It's alive!

Update, 7 Jun 2013: I broke the script that updates the progress tracker and I can't really be arsed to fix it, seeing as I'm almost done. As of today, everything up through Rider's chapter has been posted on Beast's Lair for pre-reading / QC / whatever. The rest of it (Lancer's chapter, the epilogue, the afterword, the Fake/states night webpages, and the Pieces of Type-Moon page) will be done before the end of the month (for real this time!).

I'm planning on translating Fate/strange fake, which is basically official fanfiction for the Nasuverse written by Ryohgo Narita. I'm aware that there is/was a translation occurring at Beast's Lair, but it seems to be stalled/dropped/dead. So there's this instead.

Anyway, a progress meter:

Note (3 Jan 2013): I'm still working on this; I've just been on vacation with only intermittent computer/internet access for a little while, so going is slow for the moment. By next week, I'll be up and running again.

Note (13 Mar 2013): Real life has been kicking my ass lately, but I'm back to working on this. Dunno if I can give an estimated time of completion, but rest assured that it will get done. Right now, we're at ~60% translated.

Note (1 Apr 2013): Three of the six core chapters are done, and we're at 88.5% translation overall. Translation should be complete before the week is out, at which point I'll move on to editing. Once I've gotten it into reasonable shape, I'll post a draft on the Beast's Lair forums to solicit further comment from people while I continue editing. No guarantees on time frame, but I _think_ I can have the draft out by the end of the month.

  1. Thank you very much! :D
I've been waiting for a translation for Fate/Strange Fake for a while now..since the person on Beast's Lair stopped translating for approximately 8 months already. Glad to know that there's somebody translating it (:

  2. Is there any chance you could translate the "player" information from the original Fake/states night page if you get a chance?

    1. Sure, I'll add that to my list of things to do (fyi, only the second page you linked contains content that isn't already in the LN).

    2. Never mind, there is a little bit of new content on main2.htm too, so I'll do that too.

    3. Cool. There's also this, if it has anything relevant.

  3. Is it possible to get a hold of the transcription by any chance? I've seen the JPGs floating around, but my fluency in Japanese unfortunately only goes so far as being fluent in conversation; I'm practically illiterate after the first 300 kanji, so reading jpgs becomes very difficult without rikaichan/kun. I'd like to read it in Japanese for myself though, or perhaps help you out in some way if I could!

    1. I haven't done a once-over of my transcription, and it's got a bunch of kanji homophone errors, so I'd prefer not to release that.

Luckily for you, there is a textfile transcription of what seems to be the pre-publication version of Fake/states night, available here: (http://www.mediafire.com/?47kv0l36rqsoldg). When I compared this my transcription of the publication version (i.e. the jpgs you've seen floating around), I found that there was some content added to the prologue, chapters 5-6, and the epilogue in the publication version, so be cognizant of that.

(Also, fyi, I have it set so that I have to approve comments before they show up. I assumed blogspot would've given you a message to that effect when you posted, but maybe it didn't.)

    2. Whoops! Sorry, I didn't see that, no. Then you would've gotten all three of my increasingly frustrated messages, hahaha! My bad. Anyway, thanks for that! I'll check back in periodically, and feel free to give me a yell if you want any extra help.

    1. It's got some flavor text. I'll add it to my to-do list.

    2. Is there any chance you could translate this at all? It seems to be the reasoning as to why they have pegged Caster as Dumas.

      彼の『贋作騒ぎん時にジョークで「本物よりも俺の方が面白ぇだろ?」なんて言わなきゃ良かったぜ』という言葉から、真名はアレクサンドル・デュマ(大デュマ)と推測される。

    3. Unfortunately, all it says is:

I'm guessing that Caster's true name is Alexandre Dumas (the elder), based on the part where he says "Back during that fuss about forgeries/counterfeits, I never should've made jokes like 'My stuff is more interesting than the real thing, isn't it?'."

This quote doesn't contain any explanation as to _how_ that statement by Caster leads this guy to conclude that Caster == Dumas. I don't know anything about Dumas either, so I can't say whether or not this is a reasonable guess based on the particulars of Dumas's life (wikipedia doesn't have anything in its article on Dumas that would lead me to assume Caster == Dumas, though).

If you give me a link to where you found that, I can look around and see if there's some sort of better explanation available

    4. It was from the entry here: http://members3.jcom.home.ne.jp/walachia/tmyougo/tukihime-fate-m.html

      Wikipedia gives:

It seems to be the same quote. I've tried searching for some similar phrases with my limited French, but I can't seem to find anything that matches the quote.

    5. Ah, yeah. I read over that page at one point; it doesn't provide any further insight into Caster's identity aside from the declaration that he is probably Dumas.

It is perhaps worth noting that Caster's diction in the above quote is very informal, strongly suggesting that it is not the Japanese translation of an actual Dumas quote (which we would assume to have somewhat stodgy diction, as is typical of "on-the-record" statements by 19th-century public figures), but rather simply something Narita invented.

As such, the best you can probably hope for is that Caster is referencing an actual incident in Dumas's life, in which Dumas claimed that his fiction was better than true stories, possibly in the context of some uproar about forgeries. It would not surprise me to learn that Dumas made a statement to that effect at some point, but it would also not surprise me to learn that any number of other authors had made a similar statement at some point - it seems like that would be a common sentiment among fiction authors who think highly of their own work.

    6. I always figured their declaration would be a bit more concrete. Oh well, I guess for a work that will never get a continuation, some speculation is warranted. Maybe someone will come across something related at some point.

  5. Thank you for picking this up. Do you know if they give any info on Enkidu's powers in this novel?

    1. Whelp, looks like I'd better get back to work on this.

(Don't worry, I'm still going to get this done - real life just kind of has been screwing me seventeen ways to Sunday for the past month or so).

  7. Is 偽りの聖杯戦争 used within the novel for the name of the Holy Grail War? If so, what did you translate it as?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It is. I believe I've used both "false Holy Grail War" and "fake Holy Grail War" to translate 偽りの聖杯戦争.

  8. "However, the Servant performed some variety of unusual illusion, without revealing itself." I think illusion should be plural. The part about the agent being disguised as a sunbather can also read as if Berserker turned into a sunbather to escape, so it may be good to clarify that.

On the webpage when it says "What's important are the attributes of your Servants.", does that mean the Servants the "player" can summon, or is it referring to the Servants of the potential alliances?

    1. Re: Berserker - upon rereading the original Japanese, I found that I had translated this incorrectly to begin with. The correct translation of that part is: "In doing so, it evaded the agent we had dispatched to observe them as they sunbathed." Thanks for pointing out that something was weird there. I don't quite see why "ilusion" should be plural in the preceding sentence, though.

Re: the webpage - throughout the webpage, "you" refers to the player character, so that sentence refers to "the attributes of [the player's] Servants" (i.e. the ones the player can summon).

Which is to say, the alignment attributes of the Servants you choose to summon will determine which other characters you can make an alliance with.

    2. I misread the use of "variety" in thinking it was referring to a number of illusions.
